André Martin CERN, Theory Division, CH1211 Geneve 23, Switzerland (Received 19 May 2009; published 15 September 2009) We prove that while the total cross section is bounded by ð =m Þln2s, where s is the square of the c.m. energy and m the mass of the pion, the total inelastic cross section is bounded by ð1=4Þð =m Þln2s, which is 4 times smaller. We discuss the implications of this result on the total cross section itself.

The Froissart bound for inelastic cross-sections
We prove that while the total cross-section is bounded by (π/mπ) ln 2 s, where s is the square of the c.m. energy and mπ the mass of the pion, the total inelastic cross-section is bounded by (1/4)(π/mπ) ln 2 s, which is 4 times smaller. We discuss the implications of this result on the total cross-section itself. The Froissart bound [1], proved later from local massive field theory and unitarit...
متن کاملHadronic Cross sections: from cyclotrons to colliders to cosmic rays
Introduction. High energy cross sections for the scattering of hadrons should be bounded by σ ∼ ln s, where s is the square of the cms energy. This fundamental result is derived from unitarity and analyticity by Froissart [1], who states: “At forward or backward angles, the modulus of the amplitude behaves at most like s ln s, as s goes to infinity. We can use the optical theorem to derive that...

Blaizot I propose a two component analytic formula F (s, t) = F (1)(s, t) + F (2)(s, t) for (ab → ab) + (ab̄ → ab̄) scattering at energies ≥ 100 GeV, where s, t denote squares of c.m. energy and momentum transfer. It saturates the Froissart–Mart...
متن کاملTeV Scale Cross-Sections and the Pomeranchuck Singularity
We have investigated the detailed structure of l-plane singularities of scattering amplitude saturating the Froissart bound. A self-consistent analysis of these singularities provides us secondary terms in the Froissart bound. These secondary terms lead to ghosts in the l-plane, which can only be removed by introducing an odderon singularity. Phenomenological implications of this analysis are a...
متن کاملTowards the saturation of the Froissart bound
It is the aim of this paper to summarize results about the construction of amplitudes, which rigorously satisfy Mandelstam analyticity, crossing symmetry, and (at least partly) the constraints imposed by elastic and inelastic unitarity. The results are discussed under particular emphasis of a strong increase of the absorptive part of the forward amplitude and the saturation of the Froissart bound.
